About Friends of Adel Woods

The Friends of Adel Woods welcome everyone who would like to:

  • help maintain the beautiful woods on our doorstep
  • make new friends
  • enjoy the countryside

We meet monthly to carry out work in the woods and, since forming in July 2009, we have cleared paths, put up bird and bat boxes, and removed vast quantities of litter and flytippings from the woods.

We have also put on many educational walks and talks – browse our blog  for a flavour of our activities.

If you would like to help look after the woods, make new friends and enjoy the local countryside, come along!  All welcome!

Friends of Adel Woods is a member of the Trust for Conservation Volunteers.

  1. I’ve just found your site and have enjoyed reading about the fabulous work you carry out. I was vey interested about the work you’ve done at adel pond and around it. I was brought up in Alwoodley in the 60’s and 70’s and we often played around the pond. It was always overgrown and dilapidated. One thing I’m interested in is your reference to the drinking fountain we used to drink from, as ‘slabbering baby’. This is a name I’ve only recently seen appearing in posts in Facebook etc and was never a name anyone used. It is called Babbling Baby. Are you able to explain where this name has appeared from? Is it a case that some people in Adel referred to as such yet in Alwoodley it was know as Babbling Baby? Or is it a case of a name being miss heard and passed on by more recent residents. Any information or historical documentation you are able to show would be very interesting. Many thanks.
